Both series are set in a European(-ish) environment and the protagonists are also somewhat similar. Neither of the girls really knows herself, both orphaned and lonely. They are lifted from their old lives by an older man who intends to give them an opportunity to reinvent themselves. They get a lot of support from their new friends on their journey of self discovery.
Both series are slow paced and tend to make the viewer cry often.
KxNOxUTA says...
Both very high quality animes featuring complex emotions and female lead characters who go from being lost to becoming strong women. They have strong romance aspects and both show emotionally challenging scenarios that are kept close to reality regardless of taking place within the fantasy setting.Highly recommended, but bring tissues. They're very touching, each their own way.
shallowell003 says...
The animation is stunning and the emotional tension makes you hang on by a thread through each epidode. Both of these anime transport you to a beautiful place and have deep emotional lessons with in them. Between them both, the music, worlds, and character building far surpasses most anime I have seen.

both of them have stunning visuals and are slow-paced(in a good way, I believe). they both let you dive deep into their universe and enjoy the story too the fullest. also, they can both make you truly invested emotionally.
as for other similarities, they have female protagonists on their way to learning important human qualities, the most important ones being love, the feeling of being needed and the will to help. Violet and Chise are observed while they are blooming and discovering the joy and beauty of living, their journeys making you feel accomplished and at times deeply touched.
wonderful series.
KasaiSeishin says...
Very similar, yet different. Both main characters are suppose to be owned by some man, but grow feelings for one another eventually.
ErzaTatianaScarlet says...
Both are extremely heartwrenching. There is a very clear progression of growth for the main characters that make you love them more and more. Bawled my eyes out almost every episode for both of these shows. Sometimes you just need a good cry along with an incredible storyline!
TeeDeeDubYa says...
These are two gorgeous well done anime. Magus Bride let's you stew as you watch while Violet Evergarden has no issue turning the wrench for you.
Granted the stories are very... very different but who wants to watch the same anime twice?
If you enjoy emotional love stories with a mountain of main character growth then both of these are for you.

Difficult past forces the main character take a new step in life and learn more about him/her self. Finding new friends, understanding their emotions, facing the things they're afraid of etc. Great soundtracks and good art.
MrKoch says...
Both have very beautiful animation, which captivates you and focus heavily on character progress and development.
DerpyDonut says...
Both are very emotional, and have a deep rich story. I liked them both, and if you like one of them, chances are you'll like the other. The plots are also somewhat similar, as both main characters have drak pasts and want to change in some way, wether it be learning something new or making up for past mistakes. Both leads also have to learn to accept their pasts and grow stronger from them.

They both have something to do with letters and the heartfelt messages of other people. Plus, the artwork is just beautiful.

Beautiful artwork, same topic in terms of both being about postal service. Both telling stories about the feelings of missing someone and not being able to put it to rest well, because their status is unknown.

PowerUpOrDie says...
Both of these romance series go all-out on their late Victorian/ Edwardian era aesthetics, particularly in the realm of clothing. If you don't understand the Costume Porn trope, these shows will explain it to you.
KxNOxUTA says...
Both are romance animes with female MC. Both have a past time flair and feature a master/servant kind of relationship and growing beyond it.

Both anime are about finding something you've lost or an ability and are slice of life. In Hitomi's case, seeing colors and Violet's feeling emotions. They both need the help of others/friends to learn what they're not aware of and to get closer to what they're searching for. Both shows and MCs give the same vibe (hint: they're both emotionless confused and lost etc.).
If you're searching for something that focuses a lot more on the different emotions of humans, and an anime full with touching stories that you can take with you, I'll definitely recommend Violet Evergarden. One of the best anime I've watched. 10/10.
Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara is more focused on Hitomi and her time with her friends at the photography club learning about friendship. They could've spent more time on the development of Hitomi, but it was a nice calm story and the last episodes were touching. 6.5/10.

Love both this anime in tears. In Violet Evergarden I almost was in tears in every episode, love it. (Can see it on Netflix to).I also come to tears in Iroduku but not in every episode, maybe in 4-5 of 13.Both anime generally is not so similar but the main character is kind of similar. Both trying to find something and learn and both have a happiness and a sadness in the end.I recommend to see both or if you have seen one see the other to.

In terms of the ambitions of the protagonists, their ambitions are very similar-to be reunited with someone, and to continuing doing the thing that makes their life worth while.

Both of these anime have very different story, but what I find similar is that protagonists are involved in an incident that affects their feelings and lives. So they end up having to learn a lot from life, get mature, understand their feelings better and let go of things that troubles them most. Both have a nice story, breath taking animation and emotional scenes.

Both of these anime deal with similar things: discovering and experiencing emotions. In Violet Evergarden, we have a young woman trying to express emotion and in Claymore, we have a young woman trying to repress emotion. Although the execution may seem different on the surface level, when dug deeper, there are definite comparisons between the two.
If you're into watching anime for deconstructive purposes, giving the two of these a shot will be worth your while.

Both of the heroines in these respective anime have to deal with internal and external conflicts that are really quite similar. Their internal conflict being that of emotional discovery and their external conflict being that of tension in the world they're living in (to the point of war/destruction). If you enjoyed one, I would give the other a go as well.

Both anime take place in a historical European setting around a war. Both Violet and Victorique learn to involve themselves with society: While Violet starts living a normal life after her time at the military, Victorique leaves her sheltered tower. Both contain smaller stories (Violet’s journeys and Victorique’s cases) in which the characters get to know themselves and are prepared for their own destinies.

Aight so, I just started watching it today after putting it off mostly due to not going onto Netflix and mostly using Crunchyroll, and now almost finished with if. Heard that it was good and many positive reviews from it and I am mad at myself for putting it off for so damn long. This show made me cry when Your Lie in April couldn’t. Not full bawling mind you but it did get the tear ducts flowing a good bit.I love this show. I hate what it’s doing to me. And Violet is like a puppy I wanna keep.
